Is there a registration fee to participate?
No, there is no registration fee to participate in the Walk so Kids Can Talk presented by BMO. However, there is a suggested fundraising minimum of $100 per person. Kids Help Phone is a leading Canadian charity offering the only national professional counselling service that kids can trust and access at any time. We receive no guaranteed ongoing financial support from government or any large funder. The walk is a major source of annual revenue.
Do you have any suggestions that will help me be successful as a Walk fundraiser?
There are many ways to raise funds successfully and have fun in the process. Share your reason for walking – you will be surprised at how many people will support your personal story.
Another idea is to start a team – fundraising as a group can be exciting, motivating, and a great way to achieve a significant fundraising goal.

How will the money I raise be used?
All of the money you raise goes toward ensuring Kids Help Phone can continue to provide its counselling service to young people in communities across Canada. The Walk so Kids Can Talk presented by BMO is Kids Help Phone’s largest fundraising event of the year and raises a significant portion of the revenue needed to keep our service available 24/7/365. If our team has raised money collectively (donation direct to the team, fundraising activities – bake sales, auctions, etc.), how do we collect our team reward?
Team rewards will only be issued to team captains. On Walk day, your Team Captain will hand in the funds that your team collected in person by cash/cheque, along with the team’s pledge forms and the online fundraising summary for the entire team, and from there you will be eligible to claim a team reward.
How are rewards calculated if I have raised money as an individual and my team has raised money collectively?
You may only receive team and individual rewards if you are counting team money separately from the funds that you raise as an individual. The “same amount of money” cannot be used to qualify for different categories of prizes – if $500 TOTAL is raised, you cannot receive the $500 individual reward AND the $500 team reward.
Example: If you as Team Captain have accounted for $500 that your team raised from a bake sale, and you have separately accounted for $250 that you raised from friends and family as an individual, you may claim both the reward for your team (for the $500 raised) and your own individual reward (for the $250 raised).
Any funds donated to your individual fundraising page count towards your individual reward. Funds donated to the Team’s fundraising page count towards team rewards. But funds donated to the team page directly do not count towards your individual reward, and individual funds do not count toward the team prize.
How do people who support me receive tax receipts?
People who support a walker online will receive an official tax receipt by email within 24 hours.
For those who support your Walk goal in person (by cash, cheque, or credit card, as indicated on your paper pledge form), an official tax receipt will be issued by Kids Help Phone in the Fall according to the information provided on that form.
Please note: In order for tax receipts to be issued, full names and complete addresses must be provided.
Will I receive a tax receipt if I make a donation towards my own Walk goal?
Not necessarily. In accordance with Canada Revenue Agency requirements, if you make a personal donation to your own Walk goal (self-pledge), you cannot receive an official tax receipt if you are receiving a fundraising reward in return and that donation amount has helped you achieve the reward level.

TIP #1: If you would like a tax receipt, pair up! You can support someone else and have them donate to your Walk goal.
TIP #2: You may receive an official tax receipt for the value of your reward if you raise $250 or more and decide to donate your fundraising reward back to Kids Help Phone. Please let us know on event day if you would like to do this.
How long does the walk take?
The walk is 5km – on average it takes approximately 1 hour.
How early should I arrive on event day?
Registration and event start times are posted here. We encourage all participants to arrive during registration in order to submit your fundraising and collect rewards, if you qualify.
